Optimize your new Developers Onboarding process with Microsoft Azure

A common scenario in Software Development Onboarding process, is that the developers need to configured their environment, usually from scratch.

Depending on the system's complexity and network connection speeds, these setups can take more than a day, even a whole week in exceptional cases, meaning the new resources will not be productive immediately.

In today's world, immediate productivity is a must, therefore, as company owners,
we must do what is within our reach to make new resources be productive as soon as possible,
here is where Microsoft Azure comes to play.

Microsoft Azure has a vast quantity of services for all of your needs, one of those is
Shared Image Galleries.

With Shared Images Galleries, you can pre-configure Development Environments Virtual Machines and every time you hire a new Software Developer, you just create a new VM based on those already
pre-configured VM Image Definitions.

A view through #Microsoft #Azure Part I

First, we have to ask ourselves What is Microsoft Azure?

Azure is Microsoft's Cloud Platform, it is "a growing collection of integrated cloud services—analytics, computing, database, mobile, networking, storage, and web—for moving faster, achieving more, and saving money"

It would be difficult to express everything Azure is in just a few sentences, since it has hundreds of services and is constantly evolving.

We will see a couple of samples of things you can do with Microsoft Azure.

First, Microsoft Azure allows you to have cloud-based computing, it means that you can have your own data center, in the cloud, which in turns allows you to reduce costs in space, network(bandwidth, cables, hardware), electricity and hardware maintenance.

The first example we will see is Virtual Machines, Virtual Machines are "virtualized or emulated computer system based on the computer architecture and functions of a real or hypothetical computer"

With Microsoft Azure you can quickly create Virtual Machines of plenty of different configurations.
Some of the common Virtual Machines you can create in Microsoft Azure are:
• Database Servers: SQL Server, Oracle, etc.
• Application Infrastructure: Windows Server with Visual Studio, Windows 10, SharePoint Server, BizTalk Server, etc.
• Linux Servers such as Ubuntu Server
• Community based VMs: Drupal, Joomla, Live Helper Chat, Magneto, Moodle, Wordpress, etc.

Microsoft Azure even allows you to create and upload your personalized Virtual Machines.

Let's create a couple of Virtual Machines quickly.

• Creating a Moodle Virtual Machine in Azure Portal

• Creating a Virtual Machine for Visual Studio Development
